It is an operating system (OS) that runs on feature phones like JioPhone around the world. In a recent announcement, WhatsApp announced that feature phones running on KaiOS will now be able to make WhatsApp voice calls. This feature was not available to users until now.
Reliance Jio Phone users can make VoIP calls with WhatsApp
WhatsApp said KaiOS devices will now support Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology. This means that JioPhone users will now be able to make voice calls via WhatsApp if they have an active Wi-Fi or data connection and are connected to a mobile network.
If you are a JioPhone user, please make sure your WhatsApp is updated to the latest version of 2.2110.41 for the device.
How can JioPhone users make voice calls on WhatsApp?
JioPhone users can make WhatsApp voice calls by simply accessing the chat window and clicking the Options button. Then you will see a "Voice Call" button to make the call. It is also possible for users to receive voice calls on WhatsApp in the same way as they receive regular calls.
But calls won't go back and forth until and unless the user is connected to a cellular or Wi-Fi network. This is a nice move by WhatsApp as now JioPhone users won't have to feel behind others and can also use a good Wi-Fi network to make a VoIP dial call if they do not have strong mobile signal network connectivity.
It is important to note that not only JioPhone users, but also all users who have a device running on KaiOS, will now be able to make WhatsApp voice calls. Most KaiOS devices already come with WhatsApp pre-installed. In fact, the app is said to be the most popular non-system app in the world.
WhatsApp introduced the voice call feature for smartphones in 2015. However, the feature has now been extended to equipped phones like the JioPhone six years later, in 2021.
