Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is rolling out 4G using proprietary technology. At a time like this, there are obviously international suppliers who are ready to supply the things BSNL needs. While Chinese carriers will not be part of 5G and upcoming 4G projects in India, there are other European carriers that Indian companies are partnering with. Nokia, a leading Finnish telecommunications equipment supplier, is one such company that has partnered with Indian private telecoms to help them on their 5G journey.
According to a TOI report, Sanjay Malik, head of Nokia's Indian affairs, said Nokia could help BSNL roll out 4G in three to four months. If this is indeed the case, BSNL could greatly benefit from Nokia's help. Malik said Nokia is ready to carry out the 4G project for BSNL and that the company can have the network ready in just three to four months in areas where its equipment is already in use.
Nokia had established BSNL's network in South and West India and the company is confident it can upgrade the state-owned telecommunications company's networks in record time. For other parts of India, Nokia will take longer, but will still be able to do so.
However, this would probably never happen.
The government wants BSNL to remain local only
For the launch of BSNL's 4G network, the Indian government has ensured that the telecommunications company does not look beyond geographic boundaries for both equipment and technology. The C-DoT (Center for Development of Telematics)-led consortium, which includes Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), is favored to help BSNL with its 4G implementation plans.
TCS has already provided the proof of concept (PoC) for its 4G technology and now only the final agreement for the order needs to be finalized. A few days ago there were reports that TCS will receive a $ 2 billion order from BSNL for 4G equipment. Production would be entrusted to Tejas Networks, a company owned by the Tata group.
